If your home is anything like mine, you will have “hot spots” where clutter gathers.

My “hot spots” are the kitchen bench and the dining table, which become dumping grounds for dishes, toys, mail, keys, etc.

To blitz these hot spots, set a timer for 5 minutes and challenge yourself (and your family members) to clear as much clutter as possible. There is something magical that happens when you are working under pressure to a timer – suddenly your mind shifts a gear and you’re able to make decisions quickly and shift the stuff back to its home or the bin more effectively.

The sudden burst in energy is likely to wake you up and energise you, which is great if you need a boost. It’s also a fun competition to have with your household members – who can clear the most items?

You can also focus on a different hot spot each day to keep on top of the clutter. It’s only 5 minutes, but works wonders for clearing the physical AND metal clutter.
