Art often acts a social snapshot, historically recording our reaction to specific events and life in general. Current Melbourne exhibitions such as Black and White: documenting Indigenous Australia, Eugene von Guérard: Nature Revealed, Albert Tucker’s Images of Modern Evil and Mannequin play an important role – artistically and historically – by providing social, political and environmental commentary on past and present Australian culture. Looking to the future is important too, and exhibitions such as Current 10: DUAL at Footscray Community Arts Centre nurture the work of emerging artists – our next generation of ‘social commentators’.
